Weddings & Proposals at Villa del Balbianello

Weddings
How it works: the villa hosts private weddings and events on its closed days - the non-holiday Mondays and Wednesdays - and FAI’s private-events office handles every quote directly. Venue hire is priced individually and FAI does not publish a figure, so neither do I. A proposal during normal opening needs nothing more than a garden ticket and good timing. We are an independent visitor guide, not the villa and not FAI.

Why weddings happen on Mondays and Wednesdays

The villa is shut to visitors every non-holiday Monday and Wednesday, and those closures exist largely because private events and weddings take those days. It is the single fact that wrecks more Lake Como itineraries than any other, and it is also why you will never share the terraces with a wedding party on a normal visiting day. The full calendar is on the opening hours page.

Hiring the villa: talk to FAI, not to us

Weddings and private events are handled directly by the private-events office of FAI, the Italian National Trust that has owned the villa since 1988. Venue hire is quoted individually and is famously not cheap; I do not print a number because FAI does not publish one, and any figure you read elsewhere is a guess. This site books visitor tickets, not events.

Proposing on the loggia

A proposal needs no venue hire at all. Book the first garden slot of the day - it is the quietest - walk the path from Lenno or take the taxi-boat, and you have the loggia terrace with the fewest witnesses you will ever get there. The €15 park ticket is the whole cost. Timing advice, including the late-afternoon light, is on the best time to visit page. If you want the cinematic precedent: Anakin and Padmé married on that same terrace in Attack of the Clones.

Seeing the villa before you commit to it

If you are considering the villa for an event, the closest a visitor gets to the house itself is the guided interior visit - about 45 minutes through Monzino’s rooms, in Italian and English. It is how I would scout the place before writing to FAI.

Insider tip

Couples planning a proposal: first slot, garden ticket, and keep the ring off the parapet. The taxi-boat back down is the better exit with shaking hands.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a wedding at Villa del Balbianello cost?

FAI does not publish a venue-hire price; every event is quoted individually by its private-events office, and it is famously not cheap. Any specific figure you read online is a guess. Enquiries go to FAI directly - we are an independent guide.

Why is the villa closed on Mondays and Wednesdays?

Largely because private events and weddings take those days. Plan visits around it with the 2026 calendar.

Do I need a permit to propose at the villa?

No - during normal opening a proposal needs only a garden ticket and good timing. The first slot of the day is the quietest on the loggia.

Can wedding guests see inside the villa on a normal day?

The interior opens only on the ~45-minute guided visit, in Italian and English. That is the closest any visitor gets to the rooms outside a private event.
