Villa del Balbianello boat tours: from Bellagio, Varenna and Como

Boat tours
In short: four options reach the villa by water, and every one of them covers the gardens only - the cruises dock at the villa’s pier, the Como speedboat admires it from the lake without landing. What you are buying is the arrival: the pier instead of the hill path from Lenno. If you want the rooms, no boat helps - see the garden vs villa page first.

The three docking options, by departure town

Three of the four options actually set you down at the villa. Here is how they line up; the fourth, the €126 Como speedboat, never lands and gets its own section below.

What each boat option is really buying you

The ferry combo from 8 towns - €58

Round-trip public ferry tickets - you choose the start: Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo, Cernobbio, Menaggio, Bellano or Lecco - plus timed garden entry, valid one day, self-guided. I will say plainly what the listing leaves vague: it is ferry tickets plus a garden ticket, nothing else, and the garden ticket inside it is the same €15 one sold on its own. That is why its value sub-score sits at 3.6. What it does buy is one booking instead of three and no timetable homework. Two honest warnings from people who took it: the walk from the Lenno ferry stop is about 30 minutes and hilly - Barnabás found the “easy 30-minute walk” became a hurried 45 - and the route is not wheelchair accessible. Cancellation is free only up to 7 days before. The ferries themselves are run by Navigazione Laghi, whose timetables are at navigazionelaghi.it; my getting there page walks the same route step by step.

The Bellagio cruise - €70

A boat from Bellagio that docks at the villa’s own pier - that pier is the whole of the “VIP access” in the title. About 2 hours all told, roughly 1 hour in the gardens, with a free audio-guide app and headphones. Departures at 10:55, 11:45 and 15:00, and the return boat is fixed: miss it and you are on your own for the trip back. It is the most-booked product of the six and also the lowest-rated at 4.0, and the complaints are consistent - crowding, and an hour that feels short in the gardens. Al from the Netherlands put it fairly: great but crowded, little time at the villa, excellent for photos. Free cancellation up to 24 hours. The full picture is in my Bellagio boat review.

The Varenna cruise - €70

The same formula from the eastern shore: about 2.5 hours, departures at 10:35 and 14:40, docking at the pier, gardens only. You wear a wristband printed with your fixed return time, which at least removes the guesswork. Katie, who took it, said the boat straight to the villa instead of the 20-minute hill walk felt properly VIP - and for once the word fits the pier it describes. Free cancellation up to 24 hours. Suits anyone based in Varenna who wants the villa without a ferry-and-walk morning.

The Como speedboat - €126

The odd one out: a shared speedboat from Como, 3–4 hours, that sees Villa del Balbianello from the water - no landing, no entry - then gives you a free stop in Bellagio, passes Nesso and the Orrido di Nesso waterfalls, and pours a prosecco aperitif along the way, with a professional skipper at the wheel. It is listed at €210 and sells from €126, and it is the highest-rated of the six - the skippers get named in reviews, Alessandro and Giovanna among them. This is the view the film crews used; the movies page covers the Star Wars wedding scene it is named for. Not for pregnant women or people with mobility impairments. Free cancellation up to 24 hours.

Insider tip

Every cruise runs to the villa’s opening days, and the villa is closed non-holiday Mondays and Wednesdays. Book the boat only after the calendar says the gardens are open.

The walk you are replacing

Be clear-eyed about what the €70 buys. On foot the villa is about 1 km from Lido di Lenno along the peninsula path - 20–25 minutes, uphill in stretches; people arriving at the Lenno ferry stop report closer to 30. There is also a paid taxi-boat from the Lenno lakefront to the villa pier. So the cruises are not the only way to arrive by water - they are the way to do it with a garden ticket already attached and a boat waiting. If the walk does not bother you, the €15 garden entry does the same gardens for a fifth of the price; and if what you actually want is the rooms and the expedition museum, book the guided visit instead - what’s inside shows what the boats never reach.

Frequently asked questions

Do any boat tours include the inside of the villa?

No. All four water options are gardens only; “VIP access” means docking at the villa’s pier, and the Como speedboat never lands at all. The interior takes the €35 guided visit - compared with everything else on the tickets hub.

What happens if I miss the fixed return boat?

You get yourself home. The Bellagio cruise returns at a set time and the Varenna one prints your return time on a wristband - miss it and your fallback is the paid taxi-boat or the walk to Lenno and a public ferry. The getting there page lists those fallbacks.

Which boat option is the best value?

Depends what you are paying for. The €58 ferry combo is ferry tickets plus the same €15 garden entry sold separately - convenience, not a discount. The €70 cruises buy the pier docking and a fixed schedule. The €126 speedboat is the best-reviewed of the six but never enters. My worth-it verdict runs the numbers.

Do the boats run on Mondays and Wednesdays?

The villa is closed every non-holiday Monday and Wednesday, so a garden landing is off those days - check the 2026 calendar before booking any cruise.

How long do I get in the gardens on the cruises?

About an hour from Bellagio inside a ~2-hour trip, and a fixed slot within ~2.5 hours from Varenna. The gardens themselves take about an hour to see, so it fits - but it is a schedule, not a wander.
