What each Balbianello ticket actually covers
The €15 park ticket and every boat tour cover the gardens only. Here’s the split, at a glance.
The €15 garden ticket covers
- Timed entry to the park: all the terraces plus the balcony
- The loggia with its two arches and the candelabra-pruned plane trees
- About 1 hour on site; meeting point Via Guido Monzino 1, Tremezzina
- Free cancellation up to 24 hours before
Only the €35 guided visit adds
- The villa interior - guided only, about 45 minutes
- Monzino’s rooms: maps, books, travel gear and art from his expeditions
- The Expeditions Museum, with memorabilia from his mountaineering feats
- Live guide in Italian and English; arrive 30 minutes before the start
The visit, in order
From the Lenno lakefront to the loggia and back - how a Balbianello visit actually runs.
Booking is required even for the gardens - entry runs on timed slots. You reach the villa on foot along the Lavedo peninsula path or by paid taxi-boat from the Lenno lakefront; details on the getting-there page.
- Lenno lakefront ~25 min - Start at Lido di Lenno. The peninsula path is about 1 km, uphill in stretches; the taxi-boat runs to the villa’s own pier.
- Ticket house - Timed entry is checked here. Booked a guided visit? The exact tour time is given at the ticket desk, so arrive 30 minutes before the start.
- Terraced garden & loggia ~60 min - The two-arch loggia, the pruned plane trees and terraces stacked down the rocky promontory - the part every ticket covers.
- Guided interior (optional) ~45 min - Monzino’s rooms and the Expeditions Museum, guided only, in Italian and English.
- Back to Lenno - Return along the path, or take the taxi-boat from the pier and save your legs the second climb.
Gardens alone take about 1 hour; add the guided interior and you’re at 2–3 hours on site, plus 40–50 minutes of walking both ways. Full timings on how long the visit takes, and the ticket-by-ticket breakdown on the comparison page.

What visitors say about the Balbianello tickets
Review snippets from travellers who booked the tickets and boat tours compared here.
Made my Star Wars dreams come true. The gardens and the views are everything the photos promise.
The views and gardens were lovely. Our train was delayed but the staff still let us in, and there were no queues.
Matteo was an excellent, knowledgeable guide - the tour gives you access to areas that are normally closed.
We walked straight past a ticket line that must have been one to two hours long. Fair warning though: the walk in is very hilly.
Great trip, but crowded, and there was little time at the villa. Excellent for photos.
The boat took us straight to the villa instead of the 20-minute walk up the hill. Felt properly VIP.

The Villa del Balbianello, explained
I was born in Lenno and I have walked the path out to the villa since I was a child, first because my grandmother sent me that way to tire me out, later for whole working seasons alongside the FAI staff. What follows is what I tell friends’ guests before they book anything: what the place actually is, what each ticket covers, and the two mistakes that ruin more visits than the weather does.
What the place actually is
Villa del Balbianello sits at the tip of the Lavedo peninsula, the wooded spur pushing into the lake from Lenno. It was built at the end of the 18th century for Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini as a literary retreat, around a former Franciscan monastery whose two bell towers still stand. After Durini it passed to his nephew Luigi Porro Lambertenghi, in 1919 to the American General Butler Ames, and in 1974 to Guido Monzino - the Milanese entrepreneur and collector who led the first Italian ascent of Everest in 1973. When Monzino died in 1988 he left the villa to FAI, the Italian National Trust, which has run it since. This is not a palace and never was. It is a house-museum: a small, personal place whose rooms still hold Monzino’s maps, books, travel gear and expedition art. Outside, the terraced garden mixes Italian, English and French styles on a steep rocky promontory, and was returned in the mid-1970s to its 18th-century look. The loggia with its two arches and the candelabra-pruned plane trees are the signature - the view you already know from Star Wars and Casino Royale, even if you never knew where it was.

The mistake I see every week
Most people book the wrong ticket, and it is nearly always the same confusion. The €15 park ticket covers the gardens: every terrace, the balcony, the loggia. Every boat tour covers the gardens too. The villa’s rooms and the Expeditions Museum can only be seen on the guided visit, about 45 minutes, in Italian and English - that is what the €35 entry-with-guided-visit ticket is for. The boat tours’ “VIP access” means the boat docks at the villa’s own pier instead of you walking from Lenno. It does not mean going inside. I have stood at the ticket house with visitors holding a €70 cruise ticket, asking where the interior tour starts. The honest split is on the garden-vs-villa page; read it before you pay anyone anything.
The Monday and Wednesday trap
The villa is shut every non-holiday Monday and Wednesday. Private events and weddings take those days, so this is not a quirk that might be waived if you turn up smiling. I have watched it wreck more Lake Como itineraries than any other single fact. In 2026 the season opens 14 to 28 February on weekends only, then runs daily from 14 March - except those Mondays and Wednesdays - from 10:00 to 18:00, last park entry 17:00, last guided tour 16:00. The full calendar is on the opening hours page. And booking is required even for the gardens: both garden slots and guided-visit places run on timed entry, and summer weekends go days ahead. The online park ticket costs the same €15 as the gate, so booking ahead costs you nothing extra. There is no clever version of turning up and hoping.
How I’d do it with one morning
Book the first garden slot of the day - it is the quietest, and if you have a proposal or a photograph in mind, that is your window on the loggia. Walk in from Lido di Lenno: about 1 km, 20–25 minutes, uphill in stretches, and better than any queue. If you have added the guided visit, be at the ticket desk 30 minutes before the start; the exact tour time is confirmed there. Gardens take about an hour, the interior adds most of another, and then I take the taxi-boat back to the Lenno lakefront and have lunch by the water. Half a day, done properly. The step-by-step transport options are on how to get there.

Boats or the walk - my honest counsel
The boat tours exist to replace that walk with a lake crossing, and for some visitors that trade is right. But look at the numbers before you book. The Bellagio cruise is the most-booked of the six options and also the lowest-rated, at 4.0 - the honest complaints are crowding and the short hour in the gardens before a fixed return boat. The Varenna version runs the same formula with a wristband and a fixed return time. The €58 ferry combo is exactly what it says and nothing more: round-trip public ferry tickets plus garden entry, self-guided, with a hilly 30-minute walk from the Lenno ferry stop - buyers who expected more have marked its value score down to 3.6. The €126 Como speedboat is the best-rated of the lot at 4.7, and it never lands at all: you see the villa from the water, with Bellagio and the Nesso waterfalls thrown in. If your legs are fine and your day is flexible, the €15 ticket and the path give you more time at the villa than any boat does.
The bottom line
For most first visits, garden entry is enough - the loggia, the terraces and the film locations are all outdoors. Add the guided visit if Monzino’s rooms and the expedition museum interest you; it is the only way in, and the guides are good. Weddings and private hire go through FAI directly, not through us or anyone else. Whatever you choose, check the full comparison, avoid Mondays and Wednesdays, and book the slot before it is gone. The villa has been there since Durini; your ticket will not wait as patiently.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to visit Villa del Balbianello?
At the FAI ticket office in 2026, garden (park) entry is €15 adult, €11 reduced and €42 for a family; villa plus park with the guided interior tour is €24 adult. Booked online, the park ticket is the same €15 and the guided-visit bundle is €35. Full tables on the ticket prices page.
Is Villa del Balbianello free to enter?
No - there is no free public day, and booking is required even for the gardens. FAI members do enter the park free and pay €5 for the interior, and under-5s go free. The prices page lists every reduced rate.
Do I need to book Balbianello tickets in advance?
Yes. Garden entry and guided-visit places both run on timed slots, and summer weekends sell out days ahead. The online park ticket costs the same €15 as the gate, so booking ahead costs nothing extra.
What if my date is sold out?
Try the first slot of the day - it books last and is the quietest - or check the boat tours from Bellagio and Varenna, which carry their own garden entry. Timing advice on when to visit.
Is there a water taxi from Bellagio to Villa del Balbianello?
The bookable route is the Bellagio cruise, which docks at the villa’s own pier - that pier landing is what “VIP access” means; the ticket covers the gardens only, not the interior. See the honest Bellagio boat review and the boat tours page.
Why is Villa del Balbianello closed on Mondays and Wednesdays?
Those are the villa’s weekly closing days (non-holiday Mondays and Wednesdays), largely because private events and weddings take them. The full 2026 calendar is on the opening hours page; the wedding side is covered on the weddings page.
Was Star Wars really filmed at Villa del Balbianello?
Yes - the Naboo lake-retreat scenes in Episode II (2002), including Anakin and Padmé’s secret wedding on the loggia terrace. Casino Royale (2006) shot Bond’s final convalescence scenes here too. All the locations are on the movies page.
How long does a visit take?
About 1 hour for the gardens, 2–3 hours on site with the guided interior, and the Lenno walk adds 40–50 minutes both ways. Half a day covers the villa plus a lakeside lunch in Lenno - the maths is on how long it takes.
