Check availabilityOn foot from Lenno
I have walked the Lavedo path since I was a child, so take my timing with that in mind: about 1 km and 20–25 minutes from Lido di Lenno, uphill in stretches. Visitors coming off the ferry report closer to 30 minutes from the Lenno stop and call it hilly, and they are not wrong. Barnabás from Hungary wrote that the “easy 30-minute walk” became a hurried 45; Ingrid from France wished she had known the path climbs and that you can arrive by boat instead. Allow more time than the signs suggest, especially with a timed slot waiting at the top.
The taxi-boat from the Lenno lakefront
A paid taxi-boat runs from the Lenno lakefront to the villa’s own pier. It is the simple answer for anyone who would rather not climb, and my usual advice for one good morning is to walk in and take the boat back. If the walk is a real concern, note that the ferry-bundle product is flagged as not wheelchair accessible precisely because of that path.
By ferry
Navigazione Laghi boats call at Lenno, which is how most car-free visitors arrive. There is also a €58 bundle of round-trip public ferry tickets plus garden entry, valid one day, starting from Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo, Cernobbio, Menaggio, Bellano or Lecco. I say plainly what it is: ferry plus garden entry, nothing else, self-guided, with the same ~30-minute hilly walk from the Lenno stop. Cancellation is free only up to 7 days before.
By boat tour from Bellagio or Varenna
The €70 cruises dock at the villa’s pier, which removes the walk entirely - gardens only, on a fixed return boat. Departures and honest trade-offs are on the boat tours page.
By car and by bus
By car: the SS340 from Como toward Menaggio, about 30 km; from Milan, the A9 to the Lago di Como exit and then the SS340. You park in Lenno and walk or take the taxi-boat from there. By bus, the C10 runs from Como along the SS340 to Lenno. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina and Bellagio across the water are the nearest famous neighbours if you are building a full day. Whichever way you come, hold a timed ticket first and check the closed days - arriving on a Monday or Wednesday is the classic wasted trip.
Walk in, taxi-boat back. The path is prettiest downhill-free in the morning, and the boat saves your legs for the rest of the day.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the walk to Villa del Balbianello?
About 1 km and 20–25 minutes from Lido di Lenno, uphill in stretches; from the Lenno ferry stop reviewers report closer to 30 minutes and call it hilly. Budget the longer figure if you have a timed slot - the full time math is here.
Is there a boat instead of the walk?
Yes, two kinds: the paid taxi-boat from the Lenno lakefront to the villa pier, and the €70 cruises from Bellagio or Varenna that dock at the pier as part of a garden visit. Neither one goes inside the villa - that is covered on the garden vs villa page.
Can I drive to the villa?
You can drive to Lenno - SS340 from Como, about 30 km, or the A9 from Milan to the Lago di Como exit - but no road reaches the villa itself. From Lenno it is the path or the taxi-boat.
Which ferry stop is closest?
Lenno. Navigazione Laghi boats call there, and the C10 bus from Como stops in Lenno too. From the stop, allow about 30 minutes on foot to the villa gate.
