Villa del Balbianello: all 6 tickets & boat tours compared

The three ways people book the wrong ticket
I live in Lenno and I meet visitors holding the wrong ticket every week. The first confusion is garden versus interior: the €15 park ticket and every boat tour on this page cover the gardens only. The rooms and the expedition museum Guido Monzino left behind can only be seen on the roughly 45-minute guided visit - that is what the €35 product is for. When a boat tour advertises “VIP access”, it means the boat docks at the villa’s own pier instead of you walking in from Lenno. It does not mean going inside. I unpack this properly on the garden vs villa page.
The second is closed days. The villa is shut every non-holiday Monday and Wednesday - private events and weddings take those days - and this single fact wrecks more Lake Como itineraries than anything else I can name. Check the 2026 opening calendar before you fix your dates.
The third is timed slots. Garden entry and guided-visit places both run on timed entry, and summer weekends go days ahead. The online park ticket costs the same €15 as the gate, so booking ahead costs you nothing extra. Booking is required even for the gardens; the first slot of the day is the quietest.
The ladder: €15, €35, or arrive by water
Gardens only - €15. Timed entry to the terraced garden, the candelabra-pruned plane trees, the loggia and the balcony. About an hour on site, plus the walk. This is the right ticket for most people.
See the inside - €35. The only product of the six that opens the door: a guided visit of the interior plus the garden, 2–3 hours on site. If you want Monzino’s maps, books and expedition rooms, this is the one ticket that delivers them.
Arrive by boat - €58–€126. A ferry-plus-entry combo, two cruises that dock at the villa pier, and a Como speedboat that admires the villa from the water without landing. All four stay outside the rooms. I compare them town by town on the boat tours page.

Gardens, interior or boat: the core comparison
Three tickets stand in for the three decisions. The garden entry is the default; the guided visit is the upgrade; the Bellagio cruise is the most-booked of the boats.

The villa is closed every non-holiday Monday and Wednesday. If your only free day is one of those, no ticket on this page will help - move the day, not the ticket.
Who each ticket suits
Garden entry - €15
Timed park entry at the same €15 the gate charges, with free cancellation up to 24 hours. You get all the terraces and the balcony, and about an hour is enough. The product page carries a “likely to sell out” flag, and on summer weekends that is accurate. This suits anyone content to see the gardens and the loggia without the rooms - my full notes are in the entry ticket review.
Entry with guided visit - €35
The only way inside. A live guide in Italian or English walks you through the rooms and the expedition museum in about 45 minutes, on top of the garden. Plan 2–3 hours on site; one option adds the historic boat La Velarca by speedboat and runs about 3 hours. Arrive 30 minutes before your start - the exact tour time is given at the ticket desk. Two things to weigh: cancellation is free only up to 7 days before, and FAI’s own desk sells villa + park at €24, so the €35 is the price of locking a guided place before you travel. The gate price table has every rate; what’s inside covers what the 45 minutes show you.
Ferry combo - €58
Round-trip public ferry tickets from your choice of eight towns plus timed garden entry, self-guided, valid one day. It is ferry plus garden entry and nothing else - the value sub-score sits at 3.6 because some buyers expected more. Budget a ~30-minute hilly walk between the Lenno ferry stop and the villa. Suits people staying in Como or Varenna who want one booking instead of three.
The boats from Bellagio, Varenna and Como - €70 to €126
The Bellagio and Varenna cruises dock at the villa pier for about an hour in the gardens, with a fixed return boat; the €126 Como speedboat sees the villa from the water without landing at all. They suit people based in those towns, or anyone who wants the arrival Monzino’s guests had instead of the hill path. Departure times, the fixed-return catch and my honest read on each are on the boat tours page.

Frequently asked questions
Do any of the boat tours go inside the villa?
No. Every boat option covers the gardens only, and the Como speedboat does not land at all. The interior and the expedition museum are seen only on the €35 guided visit - the garden vs villa page spells out exactly what each ticket covers.
Is the online garden ticket more expensive than the gate?
No - both are €15. The online ticket adds a locked timed slot and free cancellation up to 24 hours, which matters because booking is required even for the gardens and summer weekend slots go days ahead.
When is Villa del Balbianello closed?
Every non-holiday Monday and Wednesday, largely because private events and weddings take those days. The season opens 14 February on weekends and runs daily from 14 March, 10:00–18:00 with last park entry at 17:00 - the full calendar is on the opening hours page.
Can anyone get in free or reduced?
At the gate FAI sells a €11 reduced park ticket and a €42 family ticket; FAI members enter the park free and pay €5 for the interior, and under-5s go free. Membership and official matters sit with FAI directly - I am not affiliated with them.
How far ahead should I book?
For summer weekends, days ahead - garden entry and guided places both run on timed slots and both sell out. The guided visit is the stricter one: its cancellation window closes 7 days before, so fix your dates first.
How much time should I allow on site?
About an hour for the gardens, 2–3 hours if you add the guided interior, and roughly 40–50 minutes extra for the Lenno walk both ways. The timing page lays out a half-day plan.
